NUJS emerges as the Winner of the Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot 2020.


We are incredibly proud to report that the NUJS team consisting of speakers Ashika Jain from the Class of 2023 and Kaira Pinheiro from the Class of 2023, and researchers Anand Krishnan from the Class of 2023, Sahaj Mathur from the Class of 2024, Shivani Choudhary from the Class of 2023, Mehak Kumar from the Class of 2023, Rajat Pareek from the Class of 2023, and Kashish Satra from the Class of 2024, has emerged as the Winner of the Vienna chapter of the Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot Court Competition. NUJS won the Eric E. Bergsten Award for Best team Orals, and was the only Indian team in the top 8 of the moot. The moot was conducted between the 3rd and the 9th of April, 2020.

The Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot or the Vis Vienna Moot is an international moot court competition. Since 1994, it has been held annually in Vienna, Austria attracting more than 300 law schools from all around the world and spurring the creation of more than 20 pre-moots each year before the actual rounds are held in Vienna. It is the largest moot in the world for its field and is considered a grand slam or major moot. The goal of the Vis Moot is to foster the study of international commercial law and arbitration for the resolution of international business disputes through its application to a concrete problem of a client and to train law leaders of tomorrow in methods of alternative dispute resolution.

This year, the competition was held virtually, garnering participation from 249 teams from across the globe, with the NUJS team finishing at the top. This is the second time that NUJS has won the moot after emerging victorious in 2003. With this, NUJS becomes the only Indian University to win the prestigious moot twice.

NUJS also participated in the virtual Hong Kong Chapter of the moot, with a team comprising of Mehak Kumar from the Class of 2023, Shivani Choudhary from the Class of 2023, Rajat Pareek from the Class of 2023, and Kashish Satra from the Class of 2024.
